Fire Island DJ Mike Borowski
We like to think of DJ Mike Borowski as SuperDJ. Mike runs from NYC to the Pines in a 24 hour period, and does not miss a beat. Literally! From his infectious smile and attitude, to the love he spreads through his music DJ Mike Borowski has become a fixture in the Pines.
While he’d been a radio DJ in college, Mike gave up what he considered a hobby when he graduated and moved to New York City in 1992. It was there he became a Broadway press agent, working primarily on the theater’s longest-running musicals, including Cats, Les Misérables, Miss Saigon and The Phantom of the Opera. His first Fire Island experience was daytripping to Cherry Grove in the summer of 1995. He would later join his first share in the Pines in 2008. But despite his intense love for dance music and hosting parties, he didn’t think about returning to the turntables.
In 2010, as a lark, he accepted an invitation by his friend, New York City bar owner Eric Einstein, to throw a one-time party at Pieces, the bar he owned on Christopher Street in the heart of Gay NYC. The night was a success, and soon Mike was spinning both a monthly dance party and a weekly afternoon Tea there.
In 2012, when Eric and business partner Justin Buchanan opened up Hardware Bar further north in Hell’s Kitchen – perfectly timed as part of that neighborhhood’s Gay boom – Mike went with them. To this day, he continues there as a resident DJ, spinning every Thursday Happy Hour and Friday night.
Mike and his husband, Tom Katzenmeyer, became Pines homeowners in 2013, buying their East End home, Gibbon Hill. Mike continues working dual careers: as a Broadway press agent by day and resident DJ by night.
