DJ Steve Sidewalk
He might have started as that boy from New Jersey, but today DJ Steve Sidewalk is flying high as he jets from Palm Springs to Miami, then New York City in a weekend. Come Summer he finds his way to our shores on Fire Island…
“I was born and have lived all of my life in Northern NJ just minutes outside of NYC. I started with gay youth dances which led college night at the now defunct Connexions in N.J. My big break came from a two-year residency at Tunnel NYC for the Kurfew Party. Going to the shore every summer was a way of life from me as early as I can remember. When I was 15 I was promoting local “punk” concerts at like VFW halls. I was always on sidewalks from Jersey to NYC giving out flyers and promoting. The name stuck. I decided at 17 I wanted to apply this type of approach to gay youth dances. Then at 18 I set out to work at clubs.
I love Asbury Park; it’s an amazing city, from the rock n roll vibe to the LGBT community, it’s a very diverse and creative scene. I’ve been spinning in Asbury for over seven years, including a few times for Sandblast a few years ago.
I started djing in 1998 in the NYC area but it took me until 2007 until I first came to Fire Island when I djed for there for the first time. I always heard great things about the island, I remember it being described to me as a Gay Man’s Paradise. After my first time i fell in love and couldnt believe I didnt go sooner. So 12 seasons later I am still spinning a residency year after year and make sure to never miss a summer. I am hooked!
Iv’e been fortunate to DJ in a lot of places like Provincetown, Asbury Park, Ogunquit, Palm Springs, New Orleans, Wilton Manors, Miami South Beach and those were all amazing but i have to say there is honestly no place like Fire Island. Its the best of the best LGBT destinations if you ask me.
