In 1979 in Fire Island Pines NY a party/benefit called “Beach” was created to raise funds for a new Firetruck. It was Fire Island’s 1st beach party, creating a model for all that have followed it. Including today’s Pines Party. It would change the culture of the community forever by having the creative gays work with the local craftsmen developing a mutual respect and a historic moment in Fire Island history. By Robert Bonanno

From leisurely beach outings to the unabashed hedonism of The Pines Party, photographer Alex Geana has captured the essence of Fire Island and its community in his seminal photographic series. For over four years, he has merged work and play in a bid to authentically document this historic enclave of queer culture.

The photographs Koitz presents in this book come from his work in both Cherry Grove and the Pines, where for years he has documented local events, big and small, such as the Miss Fire Island Pageant and the Invasion of the Pines. In addition to this public aspect, his friendships in both communities have given him exceptional access to capture private moments that define, always in koitz’s revealing and highly individual perspective, the singular atmosphere found only in Cherry Grove and Fire Island Pines.

In his second collection of humorous essays, ” Dungeons and Drag Queens” comedian, Greg Scarnici recounts some of his shocking and scandalous experiences over twenty-five seasons on New York’s Fire Island. From tea dances in Fire Island Pines to drag competitions in Cherry Grove, Scarnici paints a picture of what a typical summer on the island of misfit boys is like. Hot Rods – a parody of a vintage gay porn magazine – is finally released! And what better time to bring back the stroke mag format than during a global pandemic?!? At least that’s what my marketing team told me jk I don’t have a marketing team. Featuring feathered hair, mustaches, speedos, un-manscaped torsos, striped athletic socks – and of course – terribly written erotic stories.

This documentary film by Michael Fisher recounts the unique character of Cherry Grove, a community on Fire Island, New York. Cherry Grove became a safe haven for gays during a time when two men holding hands in public was illegal. Fisher’s interviews with residents expose hidden stories and unknown facts that need to be told.

A groundbreaking account of New York's Fire Island, chronicling its influence on art, literature, culture and queer liberation over the past century. Now, poet and scholar Jack Parlett tells the story of this iconic destination—its history, its meaning and its cultural significance—told through the lens of the artists and creators who sought refuge on its shores. Together, figures as divergent as Walt Whitman, Oscar Wilde, James Baldwin, Carson McCullers, Frank O'Hara, Patricia Highsmith and Jeremy O. Harris tell the story of a queer space in constant evolution.
Transporting, impeccably researched and gorgeously written, Fire Island is the definitive book on an iconic American destination and an essential contribution to queer history.

A group of queer best friends gather in the Fire Island Pines for their annual week of love and laughter, but when a sudden change of events jeopardizes their summer in gay paradise, their bonds as a chosen family are pushed to the limit.
